About the Dolphin Ecology Project
The Dolphin Ecology Project is dedicated to studying and protecting the bottlenose dolphins of the southern Indian River Lagoon — one of Florida’s most ecologically diverse and threatened estuaries. Our team conducts ongoing population surveys to monitor dolphin numbers, reproduction, and overall health, helping track changes in this vital coastal community.

Our current research focuses on how environmental and human factors impact dolphin survival — from analyzing behavioral shifts and habitat use during freshwater discharges, to assessing the effects of boat traffic, injuries, and long-term stressors on the population. We publish our findings in scientific journals and communicate them to the public to inspire smarter management and stronger protection for the dolphins of the Indian River Lagoon.

Support for this work directly funds critical field surveys, research salaries, and essential operations such as boat maintenance, fuel, and storage — ensuring we can continue gathering the data needed to guide conservation and management of these intelligent, charismatic marine mammals who share our precious Florida waterways.
